Now that's thinking!

So, for the most part, living in Germany is no different from living in Canada. There isn't a lot of technology that they have here that we don't have back home; the only real difference is the age of the buildings (and, in Edmonton's case, the lack of a decent public transportation system). There is one little invention, that is as commonplace here as traffic jams are on the Whitemud, that I think Edmonton ought to consider: stoppable, reversible escalators. The escalators in most (I hesitate to say "all," but I wouldn't be surprised) train stations have little sensor platforms at the top and bottom of them. When they aren't in use: they stop. When they are stopped and someone steps on one of the sensor platforms: they go in the desired direction. It is brilliant! Not only does it save energy by not constantly running, but it is my opinion that the gears get worn from constant use which is why there is no less than one escalator under maintenance at any given time at the University LRT station. It's such an amazing invention! They also have developed milk that won't expire until sometime in January 2006, but I don't recommend that one, it tastes funny.

One thing, what if someone is going in the same direction as the other one?? How will people get up if they are both going down?
Milk that stays sound like it would taste funny. What do they put in it to make it stay? Creepy.

he guys, listen to the food technologist: there is nothing added to the milk (H-Milch) to increase storage time: it is shortly heated to ultra high temperature and homogenized to minimize the size of fat molecules. the tasted changes during these treatments and it looses some of its vitamins. it's rather the other way round: fresh milk in Canada is drinkable for up to two weeks, how do they do that?
cheers

There is normally only one elevator and if people want go in opposite directions - too bad! Which is why I usually use the stairs when I want to go down, I think that people who take the escalator down are lazy. The system obviously isn't perfect, but I think it's better than what we have. And keep in mind that once no one has stepped on the platform for a while the thing will shut off.

Clarissa - I figured that they added chemicals, so it's good to know that they don't, but it still tastes really funny.

One more thing I gotta say: Those Germans are really, REALLY good at predicting when milk will go bad. I've drunk milk in Canada for several days past it's best before date without problem. Yesterday I drank milk that said it was best before yesterday; no problems. Today that same milk smelled fine, but when I poured it on my muesli it just sat on top of it without sinking in at all. They do say that Germans are punctual...
